Evap Emission Control Code 0440

I have an 02 Impala LS and have the infamous 0440 code. My wife owns the base model 3.4 liter Impala of the same year with higher milage and she has not had the 0440 code issure with her vehicle I was at the dealer the other day and I saw that the dealer service department are doing a land office business replacing Vent Solinoids part # H15208329. I replaced the gas cap and got some love for about a month and then the code reappeared. Is it worth the chance at replacing the vent solinoid, it would appear so since the dealer charges $40.00 to do a diagnostic? Any ideas from someone with a similar experience? It also appears unlikley to be a broken vent hose because the car is not that old!

remove the plastic engine cover check electricial and vacuum lines going to it. this could be from gas tank to this valve including gas tank leaking..... this vehicle is not to old to have defective /worn hoses tubing as chaffing does occur. you will get dirty if you check out all the lines involved..

Re: Evap Emission Control Code 0440

Just so that nobody's wondering what happened in my case, my '02 Impala got the 440 code at 68k and hasn't gotten it again since. The car now has 103k on it. I chocked it up to a loose gas cap, but knowing this car it could've just been some freaky electrical thing. The radio went crazy on me one day (wouldn't shut off, controls were ignored) a couple of years ago and that hasn't happened again either. In that case, I pulled the fuse and the problem went away. Same problem happened with my friend's '02 Malibu and he ended up doing the same thing to kill it.

Re: Evap Emission Control Code 0440

I have not had the same luck with the 0440 code turning off accept for the couple of weeks when I replaced the gas cap. The check engine light has been on for about 11 months and I have to get it turned off before the next state required emissons check in July 08. Does anyone know the location of the vent solinoid on a 2002 Impala LS with the 3.8 Liter. I have a parts blow up of the unit but cannot tell if it is located within the engine compartment or near the gas tank? From the blow up it appears to be located near a large rectangular object!

Thanks anyways guys for trying but I just found the vent solinoid location. It is within the right quarter panel very close to the gas filling tube and is accessed from underneath the vehicle. It cost less to just guess than paying for the diagnostic fee!

I don't have the tool to turn off the 0440 code but the computer should shut off the check engine light if replacing the part was successful in fixing the problem .

Re: Evap Emission Control Code 0440

A quick update. After replacing the vent solinoid the check engine light turned off after the specified number of ignition turn on and offs. Another simple repair which will saved me big bucks over getting a diagnostice check done from Mr Goodwrench at the Chevy Dealer!
