fixable????

okay so my car overheated and i pulled over, popped the hood and went to find a phone while i left my friend with the car. i tried to start it a little while later to see if it was still overheated the car rocked and then died. my friend then informs me that a guy had come up to help saying he had dealt with overheating before but apparently he poured water where it said engine oil instead of where it said coolant. is there anything i can do short of getting the engine rebuilt.
