Hello to all of you, I wonder if you couyld give me some advice.
I bought a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis with 61000 miles on the clock, and after driving it for 2000 miles it is time for a service. I have read numerous articles about the fluids to use in the transfer box, the axles and the transmission. There is talk about Dexron 2 and 3, mopar atf4 etc. Which fluid should I use to best protect my vehicles engine/transmission/drive train etc? Are there any additives that will make the whole lot quieter and more efficient? Any help would be much appreciated. |

Re: Which fluids to use
I recommend flushing your Transmission and switching to ATF +4. You should never use dexron (of any grade) in your transmission. but once you switch to ATF+4 make sure you stick with the ATF+4.
As for the transfer case, you can use dexron in this and maybe some LUCAS if you want. Engine oil I use Synthetic MOBILE1

Re: Which fluids to use
Hi dksob81, which Dexron should I use, 2 or 3? What is the difference?
When I flush the transmission, how do I flush the cooler and pipes? Thanks Last edited by bluebird1955; 02-11-2008 at 09:22 AM. |

Re: Which fluids to use
You can use either Dex 2or 3 for the Transfer Case.
As for flushing the transmission, take it to a quick lube, they will be able to flush it for you but I would bring your own Transmission Fluid, Akit if quick lubes use a multi-vehicle type tranny fluid and you might do more harm then good. Chrysler transmission are very tempermental about the type of fluid and you can easily burn it up using the wrong fluid. It is recommended to use ATF+3 but I like to use the ATF+4 which from what I was told is MOPAR synthetic version of the ATF+3. But the ATF+4 is a lil pricey around $5-$6 a quart. and you will need about 12 quarts +/-

Re: Which fluids to use
Consider that a flush with a 10 year old vehicle may loosen some dirt deposits and cause a problem. You may want to consider instead just dropping the pan and changing what's in there (then again in 20K miles)
Definitely don't use Dexron in the transmission, stick with ATF+4, which can also be used in the transfer case. For the axles, I think 80w90 is recommended. If you have a limited slip in the rear, you will probably need a friction modifier.

Re: Which fluids to use
Hi,
My transfer case has a metal label attached that says New Process, what does that mean? |

Re: Which fluids to use
New Process is the name of the company that manufactures your transfer case. New Process and NEW VENTURE are the same company just changed the name a couple times.
