Trans Fluid Question - Dextron VI

Ok, I have a 1997 PA and plan to change the trans fluid. I see that Dextron VI is now on the market. Should I use this fluid or stay with Dextron III which is still available. The trans was replaced in early 2007 with a rebuilt unit from GM. I wonder if the trans came with Dextron VI when it was installed.

Re: Trans Fluid Question - Dextron VI

call and find out what they put in there and stitck with that fluid.
Yes, they are compatable (other fluids for trans) but if it was broke in on dexlll, I would stay with that.
If bottom line not sure or cant fine out then eather will surfice just fine.
remember when you change that filter to make sure you get the old seal out for the tube on the new filter.

If the transmission has been in about 1 year, why do you need to change the fluid? I would think of 3 years or 36,000 miles as a minimum time for fluid. Any particles will have settled in the sump or been caught by the magnet in the pan or the filter. The transmission started with 12 quarts approx of fresh clean additive-rich fluid. Normally when changing fluid we have 6 quarts of old mixed with our 6 quarts of new in a drain and replace at 36,000 miles.

Unless you've put 36,000 miles or had very hot driving conditions in city traffic or something similar, I'd suggest delaying your drain and replace for a year.
