Child Locks!

I didn't have this prob. with my 96 since they were turned off but my 95 XLT it seems as if the child-proof locks won't turn off, its irritating having to open the back door for people and I've only done it a couple times. If anyone thats had an explorer with these before can help me, let me know, I'd appreciate it alot I usually try to help here but now I'm stumped.

Oh and if there is anyway of turning off this auto-lock ya know you press the brake and release and the doors lock themselves, if there is a way of turning this off let me know about that too.

Re: Child Locks!

The child locks may not be the problem, but instead the problem may be the release lever for the inside door release. Try pulling firmly on the interior door handle to see if that allows the door to open. I assume you've trying cycling the child locks and/or looked over the owner's manual first.

I remember seeing others post of similar problems. I believe the concensus has been plastic has stretched and is no longer fully actuating the linkages.

Re: Child Locks!

Alright thanks Rod, I don't have the owners manual for the one but guess I can look in the other, on the door it has a sticker that plainly states which way to flick the lock but I've tried and nothing, so guess I'll see if yanking a little hard on the inside door panels will fix the prob.

Re: Child Locks!

I have a 99 explorer, I used to have a 91, and my sister has a 92 and they have all had the same problem. What happens is there is a set of plastic gear-like teeth inside the handle mechanism and one of the teeth break off causing the handle to not work. To fix mine I just found one in the junk yard. Any handle from 91-01 should work assuming it's the same side (front and rear are the same). As an example when my 99 broke it was the front pass. side, I used a pass. rear from a 93 and it was the exact same part. Also don't try to use a ranger handle, some look similar but they don't work (tried it!). Hope this helps!
