Help 84 2.5L Sport

i think it might have something to do with either the egr valve or oxygen sensor. when its going about 65 mph for 10-15 min the check engine light will come on, and every now and then it will backfire during the check engine light being on and only when its on. so in my mind, it heats up and something goes wrong. but i dont know where to start, i guess i could buy the ox sensor but i dont what to spend any money unless i have to. can someone point me in the right direction?

also the motor wont turn off in the right flip up headlight

THANKS FOR THE HELP

-nick

The Check Engine light is telling you there's a code stored in the computer. You'll need a diagnostic scanner to tell you which sensor is out of range. Any good repair shop will perform the operation, usually for a minimal charge. It IS worth it to pay someone to daiagnose it, rather than throw parts at it.

I have no info on the headlight motor... Sorry.

Auto Zone will do an ecm scan for free. The errors that get pulled just give an indication of what the problem is. IE error code 32 indicate an egr problem, suggesting to replace the EGR valve which is pricey, but usually the problem is a vacuum leak in the EGR lines.

I don't know if you have already figured out the problem with your Fiero but there is a very easy way to pull the codes out of your car.Any car that is a 1995 or older has and OBD1 computer and there is a very easy way to extract any codes that may be stored.Underneath your cigarette lighter panel is the OBD1 diagnostic connector.Next you need to jump terminals A and B across with a wire. They are the 2 terminals closest to the passenger side. When you jump those 2 terminals you will see the check engine light start to flash once then twice. This is a code 12 which is a normal code indicating that you are entering diagnostic mode. This code will flash 3 times and then if there are any codes stored in the computer then they will begin to flash.Count the number of times the check engine flashes and remember that number and then get a hold oh a OBD1 code chart that will tell you what that code is telling you is wrong with the vehicle. You can find a chart online or you can call you local parts store and they can tell you what that code is.After you have fixed the problem all you have to do to clear the codes is remove the negative battery post for at least 10 seconds and any codes stored will be removed.Hope this helps
