This is just a information post. I had a check engine light with a P1870 OBDII code. The code relates to a Torque Converter Clutch. From reading, I found that when the torque converter clutch fails, you typically have stalling issues when you put the vehicle into gear (forward or reverse), and/or you may have an engine stall out when coming to a stop after driving. Sometimes this happens intermittently.
My issue was slightly different. I had no noticeable drivability issues...only the light with the associated code. After much reading, and then troubleshooting, I found that I had no power in the pin in the transmission connector going to the torque converter clutch solenoid. The pin should have had 12 volts whenever the key is "on", and when the conditions are right for the TCC to engage, the computer simply provides a ground for the circuit. The 12 volts was missing from the pin, but piercing the wire just behind the connector with a test light showed there was power there...I had a broken wire at the back of the connector. After replacing the connector and a short section of wire, all is well.
Anyone need a 3 speed tranny that I foolishly and rashly bought from a junkyard thinking I needed a replacement?
