getting rid of speed gov.
im not sure what was causing it, but this morning i was speeding a little and it was running smooth until i hit 118mph(about 4k rpm). and then the car would jerk a little, id drop to 115 and it would do it again when it hit about 118. is that a speed or rev limiter? or is that the same thing, cause i can redline no prob 1st through 3rd. is there a way to turn off the limiter, whatever it is?

Yeah, sounds about right. As far as I know, most cars have governers. I think they are two different things- there's a speed governer, and a rev limiter. I don't think rev limiters are as commonplace, especially on Honda's (after all, VTEC doesn't even kick in until around 4-4.5k rpm in most cases anyways, right?) I am pretty sure Honda is in full effect as far as speed governing though (mine tops out at around 128-130, despite the fact the speedo goes to 140)
When it comes to bypassing it, you need to purchase a performance chip, from what I gather. Supposedly they also allow you to tweak fuel, intake and other aspects of the engine operation. But I think they are pretty pricey. -Just my experience with the issue

yeah it's the speed limiter. accords are limited at 117mph

man that sucks. not that i need to go faster... but it would be nice to know that i could. so there isnt a cheap fix out there? what kinda chips are out there that i could get? i was looking on hondata but i didnt see one for my engine, although i mighta just missed it.
anyone know, without governer, how fast can an accord go? 4th gen that is.

i duno how fast it can go but i've heard the jet chip takes care of the governor but it advances your timing and messes some things up for a light modded car.

Re: getting rid of speed gov.
96 accord EX 5th gear hit rev limit at least 135 mph

I have a 2000 Accord 4dr with a 5sp tranny. I've gotten mine up to 125 then shut down cause I was coming up on traffic. I probably could have gone faster if I had the chance.

there is a way but i'm not sure if that will be safe for the transmission or not. i did it on my old car and not to long after my tranny went out allthough it did have over 200,000 miles on it. it helped me from my old cut off at 115 to go to about 150 before i had to slow down

You can get a new ECU from a 92-93 EX and it will remove the limiter (like me)

Re: getting rid of speed gov.
Strodda, you have a 91? I have a 90EX and I thought its top speed was 115 for about 6 months. It just gets to the point where it doesn't have the power to push much faster, and with wind resistance it can take quite awhile to get past 115, but I've gotten it up to 130 a few times, you just really need the space to do it in, because it doesn't accelerate fast at all when it reaches those speeds, the powerband sucks.

i am just goint to throw in my 2 cents. I have gone 140 in my 2002 accord 2dr and i feel like it could have gone faster, but i got nervous. and i have gone 125 in my old 96 accord but it felt like it didn't have much left. What is the speed limiter on a 2002 model? does anyone know? I know most BMW's are 155 because it is some kind of law, so maybe it is 155?

Re: getting rid of speed gov.
No, there is a common misconception that all these cars have speed limiters...they don't. I don't know about specific models, years, etc, but if you can get it over 110, then most likely you don't have a speed limiter, you just have a weak powerband up on the top end. Speed limiters were not put in by law, if they were, it would be at 75, not 105, or 107, or whatever. Speed limiters are put in by the manufacturers because they are too cheap to put on the better speed-rated tires to handle speeds like that. So they put on the governor, and when you get that high, the ECU decides to slow fuel delivery, so you slow down a bit. Chances are(not a rule, but most likely) that if you can hit 115, you don't have a speed limiter. That's what I meant when I said that my honda took awhile to hit 130, not because it was governed, just because it had so little torque that high in the rpms and gears, that the windresistance(aerodynamic drag) overcame the power, and it topped out.
