1992 Cougar, HELP!!

A friend of mine has a 1992 Cougar V6. Starts and idles fine but as soon as he puts it in gear and tries to accelerate the car dies. Anybody know what the problem could be? Some of my thoughts were a fuel pump issue or a possible blocked up fuel filter? Where are the fuel filters located on these cars?
