Angry Valve Covers

So, while I was fixing a different problem, a mechanic looked at my 87 firbird and told me that my valve covers were the cause of my oil leak. So, I pulled the covers off, cleaned everything all nice and pretty, and replaced the gaskets. IT STILL LEAKS! So, I am thinking it is the rear main oil seal. Any suggestions before I either tear it apart or pay someone out of convenience.

Re: Angry Valve Covers

Rear main seals are difficult to repalce, and the operation is expensive. Rear mains get blamed for nearly every oil leak in history, yet are seldom the cause. If this is a Chevy V8 or a 60 degree V6, odds are, it's NOT the rear main. They're not known for seal problems. I know, Fred's Uncle Bill's best buddy had one leak.... I'm talking "generally".

Wash the engine completely with a purple cleaner of sorts. There are a few brands, but they seem to all work in a similar fashion. Use a pressure washer to blow the stuff off. Do all the underside last! Be sure to cover the distributor and other sensitive electronics. Get some dye that goes in the oil. You should be able to get it at a NAPA store. Change your oil and watch it closely. The dye will appear where the primary leak is.

You could also take it to a competent repair shop. Many have a smoke generator that plugs into the crankcase ventilation system. It will fill the crankcase with smoke until it begins to come out at the leak. A couple phone calls should find you what you need.

Re: Angry Valve Covers

check the oil pressure sending unit next to the distributor or if the car has a real guage, follow the oil line from the guage to the engine. Check the distributor gasket at the base of the distributor where it seats to the engine.
Double check the valve covers and make sure you installed them correctly.
It doesnt take much to get a gasket out of place and not notice it, expecially in the back of the engine.
Just a few things to consider before taking it to someone.
A good clean engine will benifit your search.

Re: Angry Valve Covers

The engine is a 305, 4 barrel carb, manual tranny. I checked the valve cover gaskets, and they are seated properly. I found a guy, thru a friend, who is a good mechanic. He will replace the rear main seal for me for $200. I am going to check on what you guys have suggested first though. I appreciate it.
