91 Cav power steering hoses

I have a 1991 cav with a 2.2. I went to put new power steering hoses on it the other day and ran into an issue. I was able to get the lines unhooked from the steering box, but I can't get the fittings started straight. From the looks of it I'm going to have to take the rack and pinion loose from the firewall, move it towards the front of the car a bit, and then start the lines. I've checked the hose and it's the same length and shape, so I don't think that's the issue.

Is this the way it should be done, or am I missing something obvious and making things harder than they need to be?
