Use black RTV to seal slightly seeping differential? Check the torque on yours...
Noticed my differential had a little bead of fluid collecting on the lower left stud (left side when laying under the car looking backwards, so it's the passenger side of the car). I changed the dif fluid last weekend and de-greased the differential/axel housing. At that time I got out my wrench and checked/snugged all the diff bolts.
Last night I saw that the GTS manual calls for a torque spec of 35 ft/lbs on them. Only one of them was at spec. The lower two nuts cannot be accessed with a socket or torque wrench so I had to resort do my 7/16ths gear wrench. I figured out what a properly torqued on felt like w/ the gear wrench and tired to match that on the lower two nuts... both were not close to proper torque. After all this I noticed a tiny bit of fluid still on the stud so either the differential is seeping or tightening the nut pushed out any extra fluid in the area. I used a generous amount of black RTV on the lower part of the diff... hope that takes care of it. Should I eventually need to re-seal it, I assume the unit has to come out of the car? Anyone know? Or at least the driveshaft must be removed to get that front cover off.
