Check Engine Light

I have a 93 Escort GT, 227k miles, 1.8L engine, 5 speed trans. Sometimes when i am maintaining any speed at a lower RPM, my check engine light will come on. I can put in the clutch and rev it up to bout 4500+ rpm's or downshift so I am around 4500+ rpm's and it will shut off. Any ideas?

Re: Check Engine Light

The CEL can come on for a host of reasons, but one common reason would be that your O2 sensor is at the end of its life, and isnt reporting much in the way of O2 changes at the lower exhaust gas flow rates & temperatures. You should get the 'codes' read. Sorry I dont know how to do that - having been lucky so far with ours.

Re: Check Engine Light

I know I need to get the codes read, but I cant get them done for free around here cuz nobody supports mazda OBDI systems except for places where you gotta pay, and I cant quit afford that right at the moment, so i put the symptoms of when it comes on
