Cam Pulley Stuck!!

ok, ive been trying to put a new head gasket on my 4g37. I have the whole engine apart basically. Im trying to get my cam pulley off to get to the head. An the cam pulley is completely stuck. Is it reverse threads? Because i tried both ways for everything i did. First i tried a rubber strap wrench, that snapped. Then i tried a nylon strap wrench, and the pulley kept spinning couldnt get enough grip. Then PB blasted it several times. Nothing came of that. Next i tried heating the bolt up, and of course didnt work. So I then attempted an impact with 340 ft of torque on a 2 hp compressor wich couldnt get it off. Im going to try a bigger compressor, to see if that gives me a little more power. but anyways for the most part this bolt is being stubborn and not coming off. Anyone have any other ideas that may work. And please dont reply to just say do an engine swap and get he 4g63, cuz im not doing it. Thanks.

Re: Cam Pulley Stuck!!

why are you taking the cam pulley off? The threads aren't reversed you shouldn't be having this much trouble with it.

Re: Cam Pulley Stuck!!

you have to take the cam pulley off to get to the head. beacuse theres a metal guard between the pulley and the valve cover. And i knw i shudnt be having any trouble with this. but i am. I dont knw what the hell the problem is.

Re: Cam Pulley Stuck!!

You could always undo the cam's from the head and slide them out of the holes. Did it with my 420A so I know it works. Also you may want to use a torch and heat the bolts up and then hit them fast and hard with a impact gun.

Re: Cam Pulley Stuck!!

I would wait to apply heat after you have the cams from the head. Dont want to melt any seals.

Re: Cam Pulley Stuck!!

Are you sure you're doing it right? Get a Haynes manual and check it out...

Re: Cam Pulley Stuck!!

Cam gear bolts are tight, usually around 60-70 ftlbs wih locktite. It takes a good 6 point socket, and an appropriately sized wrench on the cam hex (if you pull the valve cover should should se it). Use pipes and whatever else you need to gain a mechanical advantage and that POS will come off... When I reassemble I usually use 50 ft lbs and medium locktite, much easier to work on the next time.
