OBD System Failure---State Inspection Fail

I have a 1997 Ford Taurus with a 3.0 engine. I took it to get a Massachusetts State Inspection sticker today and it failed for "Overall OBD System". The mechanic had suggested that it was possible the battery was recently disconnected. That not being the reason I am a bit confused. Now, I did check it for codes prior to going for the inspection. Could checking it for codes possibly have caused the failure. I used an Actron scanner. He suggested driving it for a week and then returning to retest. Something about the computer resetting itself. Any hints here as to what could possibly be wrong are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.....

If someone cleared the codes it'll take some miles to have the computer go thru all its checks. It should then pass granted there are no codes.

Thank you HEADNSOUTH.....that's exactly what it was. I will wait a week and go back for the sticker as informed to do. Thanks again....Gotta love the quick and accurate advice given in these forums!!!

Look through the manual for the Actron scanner. It may go through the details on how to complete the Drive Cycle. Also, the Actron (depending on version) may have the capability to look at the I/M Readiness tests. If all the valid tests show as "Ready" then you are ready for you emissions inspection. Just be sure not to clear the codes!

Re: OBD System Failure---State Inspection Fail

Thanks Rod....this scanner does have the IM readiness capability. I appreciate your advice. I'll do that prior to retesting.

Re: OBD System Failure---State Inspection Fail

I just read the manual...as I should have in the beginning. The IM readiness test will be a great factor in telling me when to go and get the test. Thanks a million!
