Crankshaft Position Sensor

Any one know the best way to replace the crankshaft position sensor on 92 3.1

Raise car on hoist or jack the front up high & support w/jackstands. Sensor is located on rear of blockclose to center. 2 or 3 wire plug depending on options on engine. Unplug wiring, remove hold down screw, slide old sensor out. Reverse order for replacement.

yeah i know ware it is but it's hard to get to on my car i didn't know if there
was a easy way of doing it or geting to it

why are you changing it? how did you determine this is defective?

I have a code 42 end iv'e saw on some other forums that it may be
the crank sensor

The way I changed mine out was through the passenger wheel well. Jack the car up, support it with jackstands and pull the wheel off. You have to reach past the power steering hoses with one hand (I used my left hand). You can't see it and reach it at the same time. Use a flashlight to see where you need to go before you reach in. I had my son lay under the car and guide my hand, with a 1/4" drive rachet and deep socket, to the sensor. The sensor, as you know, is in an unbelievably bad location. I have heard of unbolting the top motor mounts and rotating the engine forward to access the sensor, but I haven't tried that method.

yeah i look at trying that way to doing from up top wasn't to bad at all
you can't see anything i did today but it didn't fix it

That is because "code 42" refers to est ckt 423 shorted to grnd or bypass ckt 424open.
Which boils down to possible bad ICM or ECM.
This according to Chevrolet Lumina service manual published by GM.
Or bad wiring connection in circuit.

well if the ICM OR ECM are bad then how come it's run's just fine im lost
right now on what to do

I was afraid that this was gonna happen. usually the engine would not run or run very poorly. have you examined the wires? this appears to be a shorted out wire , a wire that has chaffed into the engine most likely.so from the ecm to engine look for wires touching the engine where there is no protective loom or damaged loom if chaffed get new loom or use electrical tape.........

ok i look at the wire's today and didn't see anything wrong with them

disconnect the ecm connector that the cps wire goes to .. check for corrosion. if none remove all connectors and check for corrosion or green slime on gold fingers...if all clean recheck wire again from ecm to cps...make sure all grounds are clean and secure.....
