Fuel Gauge issue

I've got a 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac that has had a fuel gauge issue in the last couple of weeks. Here's the details.


Left home and the Fuel gauge showed empty, which suprised me as I had a little under 1/4 the night before (thought it might be because it was parked on slight incline)

When I fueled the pump clicked at $67 which seemed low for a fill.

When I got in and left, it still showed low fuel (even after I turned it off and on again)

About 1/2 hour later the fuel read fine.

I went to fuel again yesterday and had petty well the same thing happen.

Is my sending unit going for a crap, or should I be looking at something else?

You should check your wire harness going to the sender unit and there should be a plug-in connector back there for the wires to the sender.
When the guage reads empty and you have a full tank, there is a bad power connection.
If your guage reads way over full, it is a bad ground.
This is in most cases and would be the first thing to check.
If all is well and good with the wires, then look at haveing the sender tested

Altho that could be a possibility. It only seems to act up when close to empty and right after a fill.
