Unhappy 1.8L Passat oil pan removal??

Does anyone out there have any suggestions on how to get the oil pan off of a 1999 Passat 1.8L?? I have the bolts off (finally) - no small feat; however, now I can't figure out how to get it out from the car. I'm wondering if I have to take the front end apart, which needless to say is a little daunting.

you need to lower the subframe and support the engine with a brace.
