Stock 305 buildups?

I was wondering if you people thought that it was a good Idea to build up the stock 305 in my monte carlo? I want a daily driver that gets half decent mileage, will take most stock 5.0's and GSR's. I need ideas because the summers coming up and I need to decide what I'm gonna do. any ideas would be huge.

About all I can think of that will help the 305. If I'm not mistaken you have a '80 Monte Carlo? Those years made no power, I've got a '83 Malibu w/a 305 and it makes about 140hp.

You'll need extensive work to the motor to keep up with 5.0's and GSR's. And at that point it wont be economical. The 305 wasn't designed with performance in mind, unlike the Ford 5.0.

If you want speed and economy, go for the 350. For $2000 you can get a GM Warranteed 350 4-bolt main with enough mods to make near 280hp/330tq.

Thanks man I was just wondering if it would worthwhile before I went on the long search for a good 350. The only good one I've found for a reasonable price is about 8 hours away

Yeah, if you don't already have a 305, don't bother with one. A 350 will give you much better performance, and it will probably even be cheaper.

The only other sugestion is to get some 305 torquer heads. They have a 170 cc intake runner and a 1.94 in intake valve, wich is quite big for a 305.

Actually, the 302 ford wasnt permormance oriented either. Sure they have the short stroke , but the heads make really good anchors and door stops. You put performance heads on either engine they will run.

Actually, I was thinking about the Torquer II heads myself maybe 20 minutes after I posted my post.... but got distracted and forgot to edit. Oh well, yeah the Torquer II heads would help out the 305.

Well the Ford 302 in comparison to the Chevy 305, stock for stock... the Ford 302 is a much better motor... True, in the later years the 305 got better but I Fords got the 5 liter motors covered.

You really should try porting your intake base at the heads side about 2 inches in. this will siamese the whole manifold, thus double the airflow. Use a large cam around 226 or bigger on duration and around .470 + lift with a 106 deg lobe sep. Now you must use a tight lobe sep for everything to work right. not the wide pattern normally found in fi and stuff. So far i have had really good luck with the siamesing. Everyone that i ever mentioned this to said the car would NOT start. When i got the car together today, the car started on the first piston that fired. If , if i lose some bottom end, i will stall it hence i was going to put a 3000 rpm in it anyway.lol. What good is 25 more ft lbs of torque if a forth gen camaro ss is going to wipe ur @$$ at the other end. I will test the trap speed again and see if i had gained any.

THIS! > :alien2: <

Seriously, i never thought of porting the intake manifold to match...

I wish it was fuel injected... but thats way out of my budget...

All i've got is a nice Carb up top to dump plenty of fuel.

You will need air with that fuel. No this will not work on carb cars.
