Post 1991 Stealth acceleration problems

Hello. I have a 1991 Stealth 3.0 DOHC with an automatic trans. It is a fwd. When I go to take off the engine spits and sputters. In neutral and park the engine revs up just fine. All of the plugs and wires are new as is the ingition control module. It has a new trans filter and is properly filled with fluid. The engine has a new fuel filter. I have not checked the timing yet. There is no check engine light on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If it revs fine in neutral then its not a timing issue. You may be having the beginnings of a TCU issue. Does the car still shift ok (no grinding shounds or jumps)?

Re: 1991 Stealth acceleration problems

It shifts pretty good. Once the engine is above about 3000 rpm it is alright. I am going to try plugwires as soon as they arrive. Where could I find a tcu and how much are they?

Re: 1991 Stealth acceleration problems

Also the plugs are gapped at .040. I checked the timing and you are correct as it is good. How do I go about testing the tcu?

Re: 1991 Stealth acceleration problems

The only real way to test the TCu (unless you have an electronics shop in the garage) is prob to switch it out with another one, you can see if someone on here would lend you one (if the have an extra) or just look on ebay for one, it seems like the TCU on the auto first gens go bad as much as the ECu's on first gens, and you get odd problems when they go.

I think they run about $100? im not sure, im MTX.

EDIT: you may want to check to make sure the fuel filter is correct. Im not sure how you could mess it up, but Fule filter was my first guess, then bad wires, then TCU.

Re: 1991 Stealth acceleration problems

Thanks for the help. I replaced the wires today and it is alot better. It is shifting kind of hard though. Is this normal for these cars or could something be going bad. Once again thanks for the help

Re: 1991 Stealth acceleration problems

I dont know much about the 300gt's ATX but check the fluid and I know on some cars the tranny will sort of "thump" when it shifts when the brackets get old, but i think that happens mainly in RWD cars.
