Rear end or transfer case going bad?

I have a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 and if I'm not mistaking it has a Dana 35 rear end.(You can select 2WD, 4WD part time, 4WD full time, N, or 4WD low). The car runs great, but when the car is driven it makes a noise similar to the sound of bearings going out, So we changed the outer bearings but the sound didn't go away. Then we changed the U joints on the drive shaft and still no cure. Has any one ever had this problem and is it the transfer case or the rear end? And what is the cure (in detailed describtion please). Someone mentioned to me that it could be the chain has streched in the transfer case. Please help me , Thank you

Re: Rear end or transfer case going bad?

Has anyone checked the rear axel bearings?
Look at the rear end, where the drive shaft goes to the rear axel. Is there fluid leaking anywhere?
Look at the back of the rear tires and brake drum, Is there fluid leaking there?
By the tires could mean a rear axel bearing and by the rear driveshaft could mean a pinion bearing.
What about the front drive shaft? You only mentioned drive shaft, not both.

well the noise is coming from the rear, There is no fluid or leaks on the side of the axle or where the drive shaft goes in the axle and the front ones are fine. A friend told me that dana axles had problems but didn't tell me what kind of problems.

Had the same issue with a '99. We put it up on a rack in a buddy's shop, with one person still in the vehicle to control the acceleration while I listened to it with a set of mechanical ears. We found the noise to be coming froom the interior of the rear end. Took the cover off and found a bearing going bad, race coming apart. This requires a spreader tool to remove the diff. assembly. They can crack so I took it to a 4 wheel drive shop to repair. Check with mechanical ears first. Good luck.
