Unhappy 1996 Corolla 4L 1.6 Base PLEASE HELP!

I have 1996 Corolla 4L 1.6 Base and (I think) fuel consumption is very high currently its 6.5 – 7.5 KM per littler or the full tank of 50 liters gave me 325KM. I showed it to couple of mechanics and all have difference view couple were suggesting power plugs change with full tune up, but I have changed power plugs just Feb 2007 and sin since then I have ran only 7000 KM. Another mechanic suggested changing Oxygen Sensors. If I would be sure I would go with either or both suggestions (but i am so freaking confused) but I suspect even after this $400 job is done i would still have same problem and they will tell me Oh! That was fine but something else was the real reason for the high consumption.

I request you folks to tell me, how much should be my average consumption and how can I improve/fix it and secondly if I have to change oxygen sensors how many are on 1996 Corolla 4L 1.6 Base and how much on average it should cost?

Hi.Is your car an auto or stick shift transmisson?? I have a 1997 Corolla, and get 32-35 mpg, with an 3 speed auto transmisson.I know there is an O2 sensor at the exhaust manifold. There might be one near the CAT convertor.I'll ckeck today if there is one as I am going to do an oil change today. Good luck....Diesel 1962

My 1994 Corolla, also a 1.6, gets 30-36 MPG. Have you checked for gas leaks? What color is your exhaust (white, blue, black)? Sorry, do not know what 6.5-7.5 KM is in MPG.

Re: 1996 Corolla 4L 1.6 Base PLEASE HELP!

Folks last night I checked my gas consumption again and it pretty decent 33.03 MPG in comparison to humiliating 16.95 MPG. You may wonder how it is possible or what I have done simple I changed both the O2 Sensors and that made the whole difference and not just better gas I feel clearly more power too.

Thanks for every one who contributed and tried to help

Drive safely
