Angry 1997 blazer brake light fuse

I went for my road test today for licensing to discover my brake lights dont work...the fuse was popped so i threw in another . The hazard lights work and all signals work(thier on a different fuse) but as soon as i touch the brake pedal it pops the fuse, I crawled under the back and checked the trailer plug alls well its never been used, i opened up the dash to check the wiring from the switch to fuse panel and all seems fine. Replaced Switch @ pedal to no solution

What of this multi switch, everything works fine bulbs, turn signals, hazrds just no brake lights

Yikes that sounds like a bad one. I would pull the brake light bulbs one at a time just in case one of them is defective and pulling too much current when you hold the pedal down longer than a hazard-flash-interval. After that I would dig in and check all of my major grounds and connections at the harnesses. Good luck, and let us other '97 owners know what you find!

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

So i did the bulb check they are all OK, buried my self under the dash board for an hour following wires as far as i could to see no problems again.
Would an open circut in a bad multifunction switch cause my brake/hazrd fuse to blow when i touch the pedal? if so how could i do a check instead of dropping cash for a new one
I have an after market compustar cm1000a it has a brake switch monitor that feeds off the white 12v wire from the pedal switch which i think is the wire that tells my brake lights to come on , but ive had the alarm for a month and everything was working until yesterday

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

You need to start unpluging.
Check wiring to and Unplug the compustar thing.
And make sure a mounting screw did not screw into a wire some place
Unplug wiring to rear brake lights and trailer plug.
Also the high mount stop light.
It feeds off of the same fuse as regular brake light.
Also check wiring plug in wires at brake pedal.
With all of them unpluged and it still blows fuse it points to turnsignal switch.
Also check steering column wiring to turn signal switch.`
The brake lights feed threw turn signal switch and can short out inside it.
Good Luck MT

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

Good repair info and wiring diagrams are not very free.
The AZ web site does have some All data stuff but not sure how much it goes into as they own and sell all it may not be all free.
Most Public librarys also have repair info.

The All data online Diy sub is one of the best deals for the DIY person.
24.95$ us a year for first sub and about 15.00$ for more than one sub.
http://www.alldata.com/products/diy/index.html
15 minutes online and a plastic card and you can be set to go.
Good Luck

Whe testing for a short use a circuit breake to save on fuses.
Look real close Some are set up with two stop light switches.
One for stop lights and other one for transmission TCC and other stuff.

The Orange wire is the fuse feed to stop light switch.
Purple wire from it feeds ABS brake.
The white wire from stop light switch splits to 3 things.
Where it splits I do not know.
Does the white wire plug in on stop light switch have 3 wire on it or just one white wire out of it?
The white wire feeds cruise control and high mount stop light and the brake light to turn signal.
Also keep in mind the 97 has a lot of ign switch problems.
Good Luck

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

Hey MT thanx for the info...
The white wire is the one that is causing me my blown fuse i was unplugging 1 at a time and then hittin the pedal the white 1 is the issue,
Im pretty sure the white wire is single it goes from the pedal to the big plug/junction screwed to the bottom of the steering column support then into the multinfunction switch, i checked it for continuity and cant find where it has signal on the way out of the multifunction switch? , so now im stumped , i have disconected the trailer harness directly from under the hood, any more help is appreciated

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

i bought myself the alldata stuff, got all the wiring diagrams so question is....
It appears the white wire from pedal switch is circuit 17 so should i study the diagrams and hen try to examine all the wire in circut 17, it splits into 3 somewhere i cant reach...? is there any way to physically get the dash board right out of the way so as i can reach all the connections and splices because they are all at the top on both driver and passenger side where my arms cant reach. If i was to hard line the fuse like jump it wih a wire would i be able to hear a shorting out or anything or would i risk a melt down or fire?

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

You have good info on it now.
But.
Only use a fuse jumper or a circuit breaker of the right amperage to jump it.
I would just unplug the stuff the white wire goes to first like one at a time.
Cruise and high mount stop light and turn signal switch.
Good luck

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

i went and bought a breaker because im tired of going through fuses, its a cole hersee 30055-20BP, is there a cartain way it should be run direction wise, it has a pole thats shorter then the other... im unsure as to which direction the current should go. Also question #2 since all of my other lights, turn signal, Driving lights(the lights that come on when i turn on head lights) work should i be looking for a short from the dashboard to the back of the car or will it be somewhere in the front end not under my interior carpeting... im really getting frustrated because im having no luck lol i might have to take it to a shop but i cant afford 90 bux an hour

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

A circuit should work either way just like a fuse.
The white from brake light switch feeds the cruise control and high mount stop light and turn signal switch.
My wiring shows the 3 way split in the wiring harness left rear of engine compartment.
My first step would be to unplug the turn signal switch.
But do not drive it on the road unplugged.
You will have no turn signals or rear brake lights with it unplugged.
If it still shorts with turn signal switch unplugged then unplug high mount stop light and cruise control.

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

i unplugged C215 its what i belive is he turnsignal connector but im pretty sure its got a bunch of other stuff going on aswell, it no longer blows the fuse. Now how can i isolate the faulty line?
In-Line Connector: C215 (With A/T)

In-Line Connector: C215 (With A/T) (Part 1 Of 2) NotesIn-Line Connector: C215 (With A/T) (Part 2 Of 2)

Re: 1997 blazer brake light fuse

You are welcome and thanks for posting back how iit went.
Glad you found it.
A word to the wise.
But go easy on posting any All Data info or diagrams on the web.
A lot of it has copy right protection on it.
If it came OEM with the high mount stop light it may be required for state inspection.
Good Luck
