Re: Trans dont want to shift
You may need something as simple as whats called a valve body or most likely the trns took a crap on you.

Re: Trans dont want to shift
I'd get the torque convertor checked out! If it is wanting to die on stops (kinda like a manual tranny that is laboring in gear at a crawl) that is a sign of torque convertor failure. i went from one end of my daughters 96 ES to the other, replacing all kinds of crap, even the tranny solenoid before I gave up and took it to a trans shop and found it was the torque convertor. Replaced the torque convertor and drove it for several years with no further problems at all. sold it last year! with gas so high, I really wish i had it back as my commuter car....................it got 28.5 MPG and would pass anything on the highway!

Re: Trans dont want to shift
I have a 1996 dodge intrepid and my car is stuck in overdrive.I can move the column handle up and down and I can take the key out.But it won't get out of overdrive so I have the emergency brake on.Do you know how I can fix it.I heard that there is somehow to put it inpark by manually going under the hood.Does anybody have a clue.

Re: Trans dont want to shift
Come on people,Dodge,Chrysler, and Plymouth have always been known to have real bad problems with speed sensors. You have 2 located on the trans. and it is recommended to replace both at the same time and it is the cheapest check and/or test and usually needed anyhow. If your speed gauges "fluctuate",or strange things happen with the relation to that...replace! dealer will do that anyhow.
