Re: oil change

Yes, it is safe to go back to "normal" oil.
You will want to use the recommended viscosity, 5W-20.

Re: oil change

I do that from time to time. I switch with mobil 5w-30 synthetic to 5w 30 mobil 5000. From time to time. If I can't fine the synthetic on sale. I don't like to use 5w-20. I just think thats way to thin of an oil. Also I heard the only reason Ford recommends it is because of fuel millage rating. But I also don't use a thicker oil.only 5w-30.

Re: oil change

I don't mean to change this post into a viscosity debate, but until I see some proof that 5w20 is "too thin" and detrimental to an engine, I don't see why you wouldn't want to use it in a vehicle that specs it. Any used oil analysis I've seen on 5w20, even when used in engines that spec'd 5w30 showed nothing but stellar results. Why would you not want to maximize your fuel economy? On top of that, 5w20 is a synthetic blend that can be had for under $2/qt. It's more than you'll ever need for a Windstar.

Re: oil change

On the BITOG board (Bob Is The Oil Guy) the 5w/20's have good analysis results. I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w/30 since I've found really good deals at O'Reillys (6 qts for $4.00 after rebate) and Checker auto (6 qts for $1.79 after rebate). Gotta shop around!

That's a personal pref. for me.. I do know Motorcraft 5w-20 is a synthetic blend. But I have found 5w-20 that are not synthetic or blend. Or at least I could not find it on the bottle. From what I heard from shop mechanics is that the whole 5w-20 thing was to help lower fuel consumption. Don't get me wrong if I lived up North were it is cool most of the time it may be a good thing. But as I have found running to thick of an oil can cause problems and running to thin of an oil can cause problems. But thats just me..

Re: oil change

i cant remove the oil plug in the pan ,the bolt is rounding off, i have a new bolt but since its to cold to fix it and i might have to remove the oil pan,ill wait till its gets warmer to fix it ,i order a oil changer pump to remove the oil from dip stick,i wanted to change the oil and again in a couple of days to get as much of old oil as i can ,till i get the plug fixits been likt that since oct.
i thiught it was a waste of money to replace it with mobil 1 since its only going to be in a\couple of days.
thanks frank

Go to Sears and get a bolt extractor remover for the size bolt. They work well.
Just make sure you get the right size set. Vise grips sometimes will make it worse.. Also if you do try that oil pump thing it may be better to remove the dip stick tube.

Re: oil change

Did you use a drill and internal extractor? The external extractor I would hope would work. If all else fails, put some propane heat on just the plug. Then quick qwench just the plug with a wet rag. Try it, and repeat if necessary. I doubt you will hurt the oil pan just torquing on the plug.
