A few pictures of Gary Jones' carburetor setup on the 5.0, and a few questions.
Gary sent me a few picutres to post to show everyone how it looks... here are the two clear ones:
![]() ![]() Gary I have a few questions for you: 1. What'd you do with the coolant reservoir? Is it needed? Pros/Cons of deleting it? How'd you delete it? 2. Details on the MSD box setup? My FI car has a box inside the cabin w/ a rev limiter 2nd box. The carb setup looks very light/simple... I wonder how much weight you save you removing the PCM, wiring, etc etc etc. 3. How do you control the fans? Do you have a manual fan switch to turn it on in the pits?

Gary did you make new side pipes for it? Those look clean/new and mine don't have any flex pipe in them.

Gary you shold make a conversion list... or better yet put together a parts package. I know you need to restrict the fuel pressure, re-do the fuel system somehow, ignition box?, throttle linkage etc.

If you track down some of the wires in the fan circuit, you will see that it is independant of the computer engine control.

^ Then what is making it come on/off?

^ that's what I figured... manual fan switch to run in the pits. You can leave it running even when the car is shut down for a few min.

Re: A few pictures of Gary Jones' carburetor setup on the 5.0, and a few questions.
Sorry all the pictures didn't turn out better...I took the fan off the car...I didn't see a need for it you just have to be quick in and out of the pits...I took the coolant tank off also and welded up the lower radiator pipe where it went into the system...I will mount a small catch can later since most series want some sort of overflow tank...I saved about 22 lbs ( I weighed all the junk I took off and what I put on and did the math)...It just makes the car so much cleaner looking and a hell of a lot eaiser to work on...I always liked the look of the late 90's Trans am cars...This is close....Gary

Man that does clean up the top of the motor nicely!
I'm still on the fense as far as going with a carb or staying with EFI. I'll drive it some and see how it performs as it is currently. Then I'll have to decide. I guess a Edelbrock performer induction system is the best way to go (or so a couple of people have told me). Trick flow is not as good (same source). All I know if that the intake needs to be freed up some to help the car breath at higher RPM's.

Re: A few pictures of Gary Jones' carburetor setup on the 5.0, and a few questions.
Eh... if it only saves 22lbs I'll stick w/ FI as that's what a younger guy like me (crap I'll be 27 this year so can't say that too much longer) knows. I'm going to most likely go with a heads/cam/intake package down the road if the car prooves too slow.
But... since I'm not really racing... slower = more reliable and less parts costs (brakes/tires).
