Sticky Ignition

When I tried to turn my key in the ignition today it wouldn't go. And actually took me close to 2 minutes to get my key to turn. So what I would like to know is, is there something that can be done to fix this problem?

Re: Sticky Ignition

There area a couple of things that might help.

Get a new key - many times the key wears and no longer fully depresses the pins in the ignition cylinder, then it gets "sticky" and people turn the key harder which then breaks it off in the ignition. I have fished several keys out of door and trunk locks but haven't yet managed to get one out of an ignition cylinder (I take those off the steering column and take them to the locksmith and let him deal with it, last time it was $20...)

If your old key is obviously worn then I suggest taking your registration and your id to the local Chevy dealer where (for a fee) they can get the codes for the key that was originally issued with your car (odds are good it's still the one your using). Then take those codes to the locksmith and have a brand new key made off the codes.

Consider stopping at the locksmith and getting some lock cylinder lubricant, they will have something they can recommend for an ignition cylinder.

Finally if those things still don't do the trick then you can buy a new ignition cylinder and have it re keyed so that it will match your doorlocks.

Good Luck!
