Question How many miles on 5.7L/4L60?

I have 153,000 miles on my 1996 single-cab, short-box Z71 with the orginal engine and tranny. I haven't had any problems (knock on wood), but it seems like everyone has already replaced at least their tranny and sometimes their engine by this time.

I'd appreciate hearing others milage with this combination.

Thanks.

Re: How many miles on 5.7L/4L60?

Noone believes this but who cares.
I have a 1988 GMC, 5.7, 1/2 ton, 4X4 with 502thousand as of this last fall.
This engine still does not leak a drop of oil nor burn any.
The trans is original with about 4 filter and fluid changes.
I use the Mobile1 synthetic 5w-30 in the engine, tune up kit, (plugs, cap, rotor and wires) every summer. I have been through 6 front and 3 rear brake jobs sence new. New brake lines, calipers and W/C's once. 8 fuel pumps, ( dont waist your money on aftermarket, Buy O.E.M. ). 2 exhaust systems, and I think on this truck 5 sets of tires.
I would say that 80% of these miles are highway.
The old gal still gets 17-20 in the city and 25-27 on the highway.
I was under it this last summer and the frame is starting to look like this will be its last winter and will get put down for the count.
It will be sad to see it crushed but it has served me well.
Now I am courious about this post to see who can come close to that.

Re: How many miles on 5.7L/4L60?

Not even close but my 92 regular cab step side has 225,000 miles on it now. 350 (5.7L) V-8 with the 4l60 predecessor the 700R4. Still going strong, my dad bought this truck new in 92 and gave it to me last summer for my 16 yr old son to drive.

The tranny needs a seal job but still shifts great and pulls the Scout trailer on our regular campouts. The engine is still strong, I'm currently chasing a coolant leak, I fear it is the intake manifold gasket. There's an oil leak at the rear main seal but that will get fixed when the tranny gets its seal job.

Re: How many miles on 5.7L/4L60?

accually I have been thinking hard about rebuilding the engine next winter.
I have had a many car and truck and this s by far the best of the bunch. It must have had a good machienist on that block.
Pulling the engine, trans and transfer are in the forcast, Just dont know what I will do with it yet. Also selling the axels was a thought as well, just not sure.
What I really wanted to do is put my 84 camaro on the 4x4 frame. I put a 49 willies on a 75 blazer frame back in the early 80's and that was cool as hell. Once I found out the value of the camaro my mind was set on restoration of that vehical.

That's your truck, not a car? My Grand Am barely beats that! My truck gets 10 going downhill with a tailwind and drafting a semi.

The truck in my signature is on it's original everything. I've replaced the master cylinder, water pump, fuel tank selector switch, fuel pump, and valve cover gaskets. All other work has either been regular maintenace (brakes, belts, hoses, etc.), or an upgrade to a part that wasn't bad. It's got a 350 with a thm-400 tranny. There is not a single leak except for the front axle (pinion and shaft seals), which is out of a '78-'79. The body is beat to hell, but solid. The frame had light rust on it (angle grindered it clean, primered, and undercoated), but is 3/16" thick with no thin spots. Just shows what a little dealer installed rustproofing/undercoating will do. As far as I know, it lasted until a year or two ago when it started to chip off.

370,000 original miles with a TBI 350/700R4. Replaced with a 383 stroker, going strong 55,000 miles later.

Re: How many miles on 5.7L/4L60?

97' c1500 extended cab silverado with 97000 miles. At best I got 19mpg on highway once. Did get 15 to 16mpg city, but currently get 14 mpg.

Issues:

1) Transmission shift valve(Forgot the name), but it is listed in several areas on this site. Replace at 52000. Was told this was a birth defect! LOL

2) Just replaced Intake Manifold gasket - another common problem.

3) Wipers do not always work - another common problem. Cold solder joint on control board.

4) Rear end locking differental replaced last year.

5) Always had the power steering problem that allows steering to give at about 40mph. Just read about the fix for that one today.

I love the ride and comfort of this truck, but not sure my next one will be a GM.

Re: How many miles on 5.7L/4L60?

Cast iron 4 bolt 350's love to be abused and are tough to kill. I picked up a 69 C-10 with a non-origional 350 four years ago for $600. I have no idea how many times the odometer turned over. It had and still has blow by on the valve guides but does not eat plugs. I did replace the entire brake system and overhauled the drivetrain aft of the tranny right after I got it. I get 17 mpg freeway with it on 30" tires and have put 40,000 miles on it since I bought it. It starts right up in 20 below zero weather and will do it after sitting a month. I forgot to put the radiator cap back on it one day and drove it 120 miles that way. That was 20,000 miles ago. It leaks oil out the rear main and I ran it dry twice. It just won't die. LOL....
