Red face how do i check the service engine light

I have a 2000 silverado and my service engine soon light came on a couple days ago. But the port where you plug the scanner in is screwed up and i think there is a way to check it manually by making the light flash to give you the code. Does anyone know how to do this?

Re: how do i check the service engine light

You need an OBD-II code reader or scan tool. There is no way to make it light flash. The port gets power from the same fuse that powers the ligher so make sure the fuse is not blown. Autozones will read the codes for free.

The fuse is fine, but the person who had the truck before me tampered with the wires to the port and the scanners won't even recognize that they are plugged in to it.

Its hard to say what has been done your best bet might be to buy a new port or just take it into the shop
