3.0 1998 Taurus timing marks

I am trying to align cylinder #1 to TDC. The problem is, I cant find any lines or marks on the crankshaft damper. Its kind of rusty and I have wire brushed it for a bit. I see absolutely no marks or lines on the damper. I see the pointer I am supposed to line up to. Is'nt it correct that if turning the engine clockwise by hand, the line on the damper should be just past the larger gap on the crankshaft damper ring gear. If thats true, I might have to remove the damper and clean it up really well to see it. Has anyone had this problem?

Get some sand paper and get it cleaned off.

I went through the exact same thing a few months ago.

it is under the rust.

Thanks for the info. I suspected that being the case but Im used to working on different models where the damper/balancer has a groove in it and you can see it no matter how much rust. Thanks
