what did you pay for your timing belt change?

I picked up a 98 Ex with 42,000 miles.
Want to change the timing belt as its 10 years old.

Local dealer wants 750-799 for
Timing belt
Engine seals
Water Pump
Drive belts

Seem kinda high to me just curious what others paid.
Also anyone in the NYC area have it done cheaper and where?

Re: what did you pay for your timing belt change?

Just for a timing belt & water pump change the dealer quoted me at $640. I ended up getting it changed at one of my friends car shops for half that price, but it was sort of an inside deal. You may have better luck at specialty import automotive shops, esp if you bring them the dealer estimate. I personally try and avoid the "we fix anything shops", sometimes you might get a person who has never seen a honda engine before.

I'd say make a few calls and see what others are quoting you, negotiating the price beforehand can usually bring the bill down a hundred dollars or so.

Re: what did you pay for your timing belt change?

I just had all of those done on my son's 2000 Civic at my local mechanic that I've used for about the last 5 years. It cost me $502.00. They've always done a great job for me. Obviously the dealer will be a lot higher.

Re: what did you pay for your timing belt change?

I did mine myself last March for around $300. This was for the genuine Honda timing belt and water pump. Also changed the spark plugs with some Bosch Platinum +4 plugs and genuine Honda plug wires. Replaced the valve cover seal too while I was at it. I realize not everyone wants to tackle this job, but if you have access to some air tools (for that stubborn crank pulley bolt) you can save yourself a lot of money. I do recall the dealer quoting me a price in the $600+ range, though. Probably closer to $700. You don't want that timing belt breaking on you. You'll end up spending more than a few hundred to fix that mess. Good luck.

Re: what did you pay for your timing belt change?

Thanks all
I have no desire to do it myself. Got an estimate for 615 from a dealer for timing belt, drive belts and water pump and coolant. Thats 175 bucks cheaper than other dealers in my area. This dealer is a bit out of my way but I'll drive a bit for the price.
