Red face Install multifunction switch

1993 G.A. Removed and cleaned, and regreased mfs. switch on steering collumn.(goofy turn signals) was very cruddy inside, on all electrical contacts. Did not pay real close attention, when removing. So to re-install......... Where, or on what part does the small spring loaded, metal pin, that comes out the rear of the switch ride? Do i depress it in first, and slide switch into position? On plastic bushing behind wheel? On metal dampener plate? Seems like it would break off soon as you turned the wheel?

I got great instructions, how to remove, aint sure how to get it back in place correctly. This site, and guys have helped me tremendously with this car, and all my troubles. Can anyone tell me how to position this switch pin correctly behind steering wheel? Thanks.

Re: Install multifunction switch

Are you refering to the "steering wheel lock pin"? If so, it engages the slotted metal disc when the key is in the lock position. I'd need a picture... or one helluva good description to be sure. On the ones I've seen, it's in a hole in roughly the 10-11 o'clock position. When the key is turned (don't try if you have air bags!!!) clockwise out of the lock position, a cam allows the spring to drop down and unlock the steering wheel.

Also sounds like it could be the lo-hi beam switch rod. If so, there is a plastic peice that goes between the end of the lever and the rod. It's kindda rectangular with a rod-sized indentation in the middle with a rounded end on one side like: [===\ except not indented in the middle and the \ is curved, but both..... you'll know it when you see it, if you didn't drop it down the column. That brings back a bad memory of my first one

Like I said... picture?

Re: Install multifunction switch

xeroinfinity, thanks that is the shot of the collumn. But the metal spring loaded pin, i am wondering about is On the mfs itself. It protrudes out against spring pressure through the switch case about, one inch or so. it is definitely part of the switch itself. Looks like it would "ride" on, or maybe be depressed by something on the wheel/collumn. I did not know you had to remove the steering wheel first? anyway i just unhooked two molded wire connectors, took out two screws, and the entire switch unit was in my hands. I just did not notice how to "position" this spring loaded "flat-shaped-rod" coming out the case of the switch, to reinstall it. I wish i knew how to post picture, and had a camera. I wish also i could describe this better. I am sorry now that i have totally confused everyone, including myself!!!

Re: Install multifunction switch

J-Ri, Thanks for info. But this part is "part of" the switch itself. i dont have an air bag on this unit. my whole switch comes out in one whole peice, by taking out two screws. and two moulded wire connectors. It is a flat shaped rod, sticks out of the case about one inch or so.It does not have a snap action, click, or fasten to anything. Just comes out of the switch case, and you can push it in and out by hand, under spring pressure. its normal posistion is "out" when holding switch in your hand. Clear as mud hey? Im sorry.

Re: Install multifunction switch

IT should only go one way, just make sure the spring gets compressed straight when you put the switch into position.
