Fuel Filter Help?

Hello, just wanted to change my fuel filter but I need some tips and pointers on how to do it and procedures to take. My car is getting bad gas mileage and I think it might be the fuel filter. I have new plugs and wires. No Emission codes on my computer and its just getting bad mileage. Any help?

Thanks in advance

Nick

Re: Fuel Filter Help?

That's probably not the source of bad gas mileage.

To change the filter, you need needle nose pliers (or strong hands), 16mm line wrench and a 20(maybe21)mm wrench. An open end wrench is fine for the 2xmm, but do use a line wrench for the 16mm on the line. Also a drain pan to catch what gas leaks out of the lines.

1. To relieve the pressure from the fuel system, remove the fuel pump fuse or relay and start the engine. I usually bypass this step and go straight to step 2, as that will also relieve the pressure.

2. Put the wrenches on the hex fittings on one side of the filter and loosen them. You may want to spray with penetrating oil if old or rusty. If you bypassed step 1, wait for the spray to turn into a drip and remove the rest of the way. At this point, you should have the drain pan underneath it.

3. There are two kinds of quick connects used, depending on year. Some have a horseshoe shaped plastic clip that pulls straight out. Some have a plastic clip around the line, squeeze both tabs in and pull while squeezing. On both types, you may need to twist the filter while pulling.

4. You're half way there, do everything backwards with the new filter.
