Power Steering problems

I have a 1992 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 engine. My power steering pressure line is shooting fluid through the fitting. The fitting is the one which is screwed into the PS pump. The fluid is shooting around the metal line. Is there a way to repair this without replacing the whole pressure line again?

Thanks in advance

Re: Power Steering problems

Not safely. Unless you have a hydraulic crimping machine.

Re: Power Steering problems

If this is the second time this is happening with a new metal line and nut, you may have a mating problem. Crossed threads, line cocked, mating surface on ps pump damaged, bent flange/flare on pipe... I'd check and correct before victomizing your wallet and another pipe assembly. hope it works.

Re: Power Steering problems

Also make sure any o-ring or conical seals are properly installed.

Re: Power Steering problems

Thanks,
How would I go about checking the flare on the pipe? I think that is my problem. The threads are fine because I put the pipe most of the way on by hand. Is there some sort of seal that is inside of the fitting where it screws into the PS pump or does the flared end of the pipe seal once you tighten the nut down inside the pump?

Re: Power Steering problems

TripletDaddy,
The pipe has been on the car for about six months before it started shooting fluid from around the fitting. It is where the nut meets the pipe.

Re: Power Steering problems

Well, at this point I can only generalize and recommend talking to an experienced ford mechanic or ford parts guy to find out if there is supposed to be something like an o-ring in addition to the metal to metal connection where it is leaking. If it is a flare fitting, the pipe should have a funnel look to it and it fits over a ball shaped mate. A compression fitting is kind of the reverse with the pipe configuration mating to a funnel inside the fitting. Kind of a variation of the compression fitting includes some type of sealing ring. The fitting you are connecting to has o-rings but they are on the inside of the ps pump reservoir. So, I don't see how they would cause your problem, but I'm not there to take it apart to besure it doesn't. It sounds like you have some sort of defect as I have described in a previous post or a sealing ring is missing. I have seen flat plastic, nylon, rubber o-rings used, but everything I have found in the manuals does not describe or show a ring. I'd come over if you were close, but I doubt that you are. Sorry.
