What will void warranty

I have a quick question, what kinds of mods will void my warranty, I presently have a K&N 77 series intake p/n: 77-3050KP, and am planning to swap my stock muffler with a Flowmaster Super 40. If these mods do no harm to my warranty, what type of mods will?

Re: What will void warranty

nothing aftermarket can legally void your warranty, unless they can prove that the part in question caused the problem... Even the dealer cannot void the entire vehicle warranty because of after-market parts being installed. Most the time they will give you the run-around so they dont have to fix it. I.e. they cant void a fix of you A/C because of a new exhaust system. If you put on a suspension lift and oversize tires and end up having transmission problems they cannot deny your claim because of the suspension lift, but they can because they said the tires caused it. My best advice is to find a dealer that works with you and mods to you Silvy... Some do, some dont.

For your situation, the FIPK wont void it, but if your MAF goes out, they will most likely blame an over-oiled filter. Sorry for rambling, so you should be OK

Re: What will void warranty

It's a free country and you can do whatever you want to your vehicle.
The factory warranty is for FACTORY defects ONLY. If any of your modifications are deamed to be the cause of concern in regards to the warranty, neither the dealer nor GM have to honor the warranty on that item.
IE: you have an aftermarket intake system and muffler and your fuel mileage drops or your vehicle runs bad, they do not have to honor the warranty. But if your window stops working, the aftermarket equipment did not cause that, so it would be repaired under warranty

Re: What will void warranty

most parts will say on the box if they void warrantys or not, and if they are legal for emissions.

Read again what GMMERLIN said. I never cared what a box had to say. If I felt it affected the failure, I denied the claim. I really made a guy mad one day when I denied his diesel engine which had burned pistons, bent push rods and burned valves. He had installed an aftermarket diesel performance kit from a famous manufacturer that claimed it wouldn't cause an engine failure and that his warranty would remain in effect. It cost him thousands of dollars! I did have some empathy for him but it wasn't a defect in materials or workmanship that GM was responsable for.

If the aftermarket company says it does not cause engine damage, void warrantys ect. why doesn't that guy have a lawsuit on that aftermarket company?

He may have persued a settlement with the company. This happened 3 years ago just before I retired so I did not get any updates on him. It did happen at a Dealership that is 6 miles from me and I get there often so I will see if they have an update on him. I have a gut feeling that this guy beat the crap out of the engine and if driven is a sane manner the modification might not have caused a problem. It is obvious it was over reved because it had bent pushrods and combustion temps were very high and that caused burned pistons and valves. I want to put a nice sounding muffler on my 2005 Crew Cab which is still under warranty and also covered by a GMPP for an additional 3 years. I can't see anyone having a problem with just a muffler being changed but you still have to be carefull with changes to a vehicle under warranty. In most cases common sense rules.

Re: What will void warranty

give GM/DEALERSHIP an excuse to deny your repairs they will. they are very bad when the cost is high and will say because you did this and that we can't cover that repair..............anything that is changing the original design of vehicle is grounds for denial i don't care what it says on the box. also it usually says liability is limited to cost of product. so if you damage your engine now what? be carefull, make sure that your mod will not cause problems and it something happens reverse mod to original before taking to dealer................
