Faulty Cruise Control on '96 Chevy Z71

I know, I know... newb with all the questions...

My cruise control went out about six months ago. I can get by without it, so it hasn't been a huge issue but it is something I would like to get fixed.

Is there any "quick remedy" to fix this, or is it something I need to take to a mechanic? I'd like to learn how to do all this myself, but if it's too complicated I'll take it in.

Truck is a '96 Chevy Z71 with 240,000 miles.

This out of a '98 C/K service manual.

3 fuses to check all in the I/P fuse block.

"CRUISE" fuse #6 10a.
"STOP/HAZ" fuse #1 20a.
"BRAKE" fuse #18 10a.

Next is the brake switch. With the key in the RUN position check for voltage on these 2 wires.

Purple should have voltage with the brake pedal released and no voltage with the pedal applied.

White should have no voltage with pedal released and voltage with pedal applied.

If all that checks ok the problem lies in the CC switch, CC module , the VCM and/or the wiring to and from those units.

replace all the vacuum lines under the hood of the truck. a leak will cause the cruse to not engage. if it does engage it will drop out. you will find in a truck this ould a few of the hoses have gone bad. keeping the vacum hoses in good shape will improve your gas milage just a bit.
