Problem with programming keyfob (97 SE)
I've read numerous articles on many sites / forums and none seem to mention the problem I seem to have. When I follow the steps to get it in diagnostic mode, it bings twice, stops for about 3 seconds, bings twice again.
At this point I tried to hold lock/unlock together on my new remote (Which I got from another Pontiac), and it started dinging in some morse code. I know this is it telling me something but I have no clue what it is. It goes for about 25 seconds though from when I hold down the buttons. Any insight? The remote is not from the same car as mine but it is the same remote - if that matters. |

I'm not sure what you did but this is what I did for my 97 SE:
Remote Keyless Entry Programming '97 The MALL PGM fuse should be the 10A rated fuse (red) right next to the area of the power window circuit breaker. (Use needle nose pliers to remove) RKE/Transmitter Programming 1997 1) Sit in driver's seat. Remove ignition key from lock cylinder. Close all vehicle doors. Remove MALL PGM fuse from fuse panel. 2) Insert ignition key and turn key to ACC position. Turn ignition to OFF, then back to ACC within 1 second. Open then close any vehicle door. Chime will be heard when remote control door lock receiver enters programming/diagnostics mode. If chime is not heard, repeat procedure. (I did not hear a chime) 3) Depress and hold RKE transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 14 seconds. One chime should be heard at 7 seconds to confirm successful synchronization and 14 seconds to confirm successful programming. (I did not hear a chime) 4) Repeat Step 3 for each transmitter to be programmed. Remove ignition key. Reinstall MALL PGM fuse. 5) Test remote.

I know I've followed the steps correctly because it dings once after I turn the key to ACC the second time, and then after I open and close a door it dings twice, stops for 2 seconds, dings three times, goes silent for 6 or 7 seconds and then dings 2 and 3 times again. At this point I hold Lock/Unlock together. After about 7 seconds the car starts dinging diagnostic codes for like 30 seconds, goes silent for 7 seconds, and dings once, but doesn't ding again.

I'm a mechanic (Well... apprentice) myself so I have a scanner to check for codes. There's no way I'm dishing GM 100+ bucks for 2 cents worth of insight, which will end up being "You need a new keyfob, they cost us 20 cents to make but we'll give you the special customer discount of $155 and only charge you $50 to do those 10 steps and make you think it takes half an hour to do"
Where would the RKE receiver be located on my model? I figure I can probe it to see if its giving signals and if so assume its my keyfob. |

You may be able to pick up some DTCs most likely generic without using a Tech II so won't hurt to give it a try.
The remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) should be located behind the center/left area of the dash. Small black module. What are the markings on your keyfobs? GM Part number and FCC data.

The one that came with the car (Which I'm pretty sure is burnt out) is GM 10246216, FCC AB002041 (There is also a canada id of 218 101 487)
I've tried a few from other cars (Including my old 95 Regal which is basically a Grand Prix). The one that gives me the insane beeping is GM/LEAR 15042968, FCC KOBLEAR1XT and Canada 3521 102 1718. I'm pretty sure the one I'm trying to use is from a Montana/Venture because it has a panic button in place of a trunk button. It could very well explain the problem, but I've been put under the impression that they are interchangeable between cars. I also have a 2004 GP GT keyfob that is a bit different... Would it possibly work, or do I have to get a specific fob for a 97-03 Grand Prix? |

Actually the remote by the ID numbers must match exactly and not really interchangeable especially between dissimilar GM vehicles. Get the proper remote and hopefully you should be good to go.
