What's keeping your trunk lid on?

I need to come up with something better to keep my trunk lid on. When I got the car the lid was held on with some 1/4" stove bolts.

Those didn't work too well and I had to as some wire ties to the back at VIR.

What's holding yours on?

On my car it's held on with Dzus fasteners on the sides and edge close to the rear window, and rubber straps to the rear bumper.

The thumb screws are a pain but effective - we have four cars and they're all different...the trunk lid REALLY wants to come off...lots of lift in there...we had the Panoz boys fix one before they delivered it and they used the rubber strap and its not enough...seven thumb screws seems to to the trick...three on leading edge and two more on each side...we plan a better solution in the future...

I have 3 scres accross the edge nearest the window and 2 of the rubber strap things on the rear down to the bumper. It looks like the body work has provisions for 2 more of the screw things.

I had a blank rear deck lid that needed to be mounted. The fasteners are DZUS fast lead captive screws. I picked up several from SouthCo. The rear edge is held on by 2 ea. rubber catches (kinda like a jeep hood catch). I think is very secure, but that's 9 attachment points to keep it held in place. Not good for fast re-fueling.

The fasteners on the #38 car are also SouthCo fasteners and the trunk is mounted as you described. But from their web site, it didnt look like they sold direct to the public. Were you able to buy directly from them? and if so how?

I just put a bracket on each spoiler plate and put two hood pins in mine....

Have you had it on the track like that yet?

I had 5 screws in mine and it still wanted to come up. I had to use some tie wraps through the back too. Mine is a plastic one.

I haven't had it on the track but I had the shop fan on and it didn't come off

.......I don't know Jim...I have heard that the plastic cars have some problems with stuff comming off...You might try bonding an aluminum brace around the inside of it or switch to a fiberglass one (guess who has a few of those cheap

One other thing that may help is taking a one inch hole saw and putting about 5 nicley spaced holes across the tailight panel...I've seen this done to let pressure out of trunk areas before and done right it looks kind of neat...

I think Garys idea about adding brackets to your car is a much better idea the cutting holes in the rear of the car. I say this because I know a heavier cars ride quailty is much better. I know your all about rideing smooth and slow.

My company has an account with Southco. So whne I called them, they gave me samples to "make sure the fastener worked correctly."

I need to purchase some longer ones, as the smaller diameter screws weren't long enough.

Are you guys with palastic bodied cars that have trouble with the trunk lids coming off putting the rear flange inside or outside the rear bumper? It is supposed to go inside, but I think the schools were putting them to the outside and adding the rubber latches that were used on the fiberglass cars. All of the GTS cars had the 5 southco fast thread fasteners and nothing else - and I don't think there were any problems. Just make sure to tuck the back flange of the lid inside the rear bumper.

A properly done remote fuel fill would be the real ticket. The ones that the school did did not have enough drop from the fill cap to the fuel cell for the fuel to flow in well without backing up. Figure out a way to get the filler higher and then forget about removing the trunk lid. I'll have to look at working one out and bending up the tube kits to do this.

When we spec'd out the Southco fast thread fasteners we had no trouble getting them - since then it seems to have gotten more difficult. Not sure why. But we tried a couple of quarter turn options, and they all failed fairly quickly. The fast thread seemed more resistant to breaking, and gave a lot better clamping force.
