YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
While I'm waiting for some PE parts to arrive for my RCV rebuild, I thought I'd go ahead and start work on my next build: the YZR Barros Pacific GP3 using the ST27 transkit. I had some trouble finding this transkit--ultimately I had to purchase the kit for the Fortuna livery and purchase the Pacific GP3 decals separately. I really like the cowls and livery on this bike.
I prepared and sprayed the resin pieces and cowlings over the summer, when weather was good. Here's what's done so far:Cowlings: Some close-ups of the modified front wheel cowl: The exhaust, primed and with spring fasteners: The modified air intake, with SMS 1/20 twill CF (a slight portion out of alignment along the middle of the seam--moved when I set it down to dry . Oh well--no one'll see it):Further modified parts from the Tamiya kit, side-by-side with unmodified parts for comparison: As always, feedback appreciated (and call me Mike).

I love this livery! It will come out great. Nice work to the frame sections!

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
By the way, in what way have you modified the front mud guard?

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
Joel: the front guard is modified per the transkit specs--that is, filling in the side openings with the metal pieces provided and rounding off. Here's some pics for comparison with an unmodified part:

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
Some painting questions--I need your feedback:
1) I'm really enamored with Alclad2 right now and would like to use it as much as possible for my bike models--anyone know what the best matches would be in Alclad for Tamiya colors: X-10 (Gun metal), X-32 (titanium silver), X-34 (metallic brown), and XF-56 (metallic grey)? 2) I'm a little scared off by the 2k health risks, since my work area is in the basement, half of which, though in a separate room, is the kid's playroom. So is the Micro-varnish a good alternative? How is it with airbrush application? Any other options? 3) finally, what's the best method for blackwashing (the grill, for example)? Also, anyone know where I can get 1:12 bolts like those in this build (not mine): And, finally, what's a good styrene filler--for parts like the swingarm, etc, where a lot is needed...? Thanks for taking the time to read through this and help me out... |

2) I usually use Mr Hobby glos varnish 501. These are spray cans, so you can use them outdoors without a problem 3) Interesting question. I like to know this too. 4) You can use tamiya epoxy putty. Works very well . |

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
hi mike, first of all nice progress on your build, I have the same on my workbench but with the fortuna livery. a great source for mini bolts and rivets is scale hardware. http://www.scalehardware.com/. they are nice guys.
hope this will help you. looking forward to your progress. |

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
I think Hiroboy.com has a range of in-store-made bolts and rivets.
About black washing I tend to use a highly dilluted black enamel paint. That makes it easy to remove any excess. /Joel

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
Thanks for the helpful feedback gents. Please keep it coming.
Joel: what ratio do yo use for the blackwash? And what do you apply and wipe off with? hornet1: Thanks for that helpful source! They dont seem to have rivets with sinkholes, though, which are used on the actual bike (see the excellent data photos for the Intercolor YZR here: http://www.joe250.com/motorcycles/ya...yamaha-m1.html). May be I'm being too perfectionistic...;-P Also, I'm still really concerned about going the 2k route--both because of the kids in the house (though I usually model in the basement when they're sleeping) and for myself. Zero's warning regarding their 2k system scares me. Is Micro-Gloss is comparable alternative? Can it be airbrushed? Or is 2k the best? (I can't use spray cans right now since I'm in the Chicago are and its FREEZING outside ).Last edited by barhebraeus; 01-17-2008 at 08:30 AM. |

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
What I use for black wash is regular testors flat black enamel, put some on a mixing dish or a bottle cap and then put two-three drops of thinner. You can add thinner or paint depending on the viscosity you want and the effects desired.

Re: YZR-M1 Pacific GP3 Barros
Thanks for the tip slk320.
So here's some more work, step-by-step (if I'm being unnecessarily step-by-step in my updates let me know gents): I modified the right side heat shield per the ST27 instructions and per some reference photos I was able to track down (after much searching--this bike just isn't shown a lot ). The extra modification I made was to cut off and seal up/smooth out the extra screw hole:Here's an unmodified heat shield side-by-side for comparison: Here's the ref pic: Stayin' warm in Chicago... Oh--and another quick paint question: Do those of you who use Alclad 2 for the exhaust apply a clear coat before applying the Alclad transparent colors for heat-staining? If so, which clear do you use (I ask because the Alclad website recommends using a water-base clear coat on high shine paints). Also, to follow up an earlier question: which Alclad color (magnesium, pale burnt metal, or jet exhaust; see samples here: http://www.alclad2.com/alclad-home.html) matches best with gun metal and metallic grey (I keep asking these color questions because I'm (seriously) slightly color-blind).
