97 Cherokee will not turn on anything

OK guys I have a BIG problem I can not figure out.

I bought the 97 Cherokee and was told the head gasket was blown.

I attempted to connect the battey but when I did it burnt the wire going to the fuse box in to. I disconnected everything and repaired the wire.

Make a long story short the alternator was toast(test bad at autozone), I bought a new one and a new battery as well.

I replaced the head gasket and reinstalled everything now with everything connected back up I do not get anything, NO LIGHTS, buzzers, won't crank.

I had the starter tested and it tested good.

I have rebuilt several cars from the ground up but this one has me stumped.

BTW it is my first Jeep.

97 Cherokee 4.0 liter engine, stright 6 cylinder.

I am at a total loss, please assist when your time permits.

Troy

Have you checked all of the fuses? There is a main fuse that runs off of the battery under the hood. I would check this fuse first.

Yes I checked the fuses under the hood.

I did connect my truck to it and now I get lights, buzzers, etc...

Still it will not crank, I had the started tested yesterday.

I will let it charge on my truck for awhile.

Yes I turned the engine by hand, it turns fine, it appear the starter is not getting voltage.

When I turn the key I hear a click on the inside but I do not hear the starter click like it should.

I have it on a battery charger now, I will let it sit for awhile.

I was reading about a security system on Jeeps , could this be causing my no crank issue?

Thanks

Re: 97 Cherokee will not turn on anything

If you can read a wiring diagram and have the one for the jeep, check and see if there is a fusible link. You will have to test both sides of it to see if it is blown

Re: 97 Cherokee will not turn on anything

I don't think jeeps have fusible links on them. For the problem you're experiencing two things jump immediately into mind. Check the NSS(neutral safety switch) and CPS(crankshaft position sensor). If either of those is bad it would cause it not to do anything especially the NSS. There is alot of info on this forum about how to test the switch and cps, and also how to rebuild the NSS if it is faulty as new ones are around $250. Another thing to check is that the ignition switch located on the lower half of the steering column under the dash is positioned correctly so that when you turn the key to start the switch moves into the same position. Also check all the fuses under the dash as well as I think a couple of them control some parts required for starting. Also when you turn the key to the "on" position do you hear the fuel pump engage and pressurize the line or not?

I do NOT hear the fuel pump engage therefore I can not bleed the air from the fuel line.

I will check the other things but I would think I should at least hear the fuel pump prior to checking out the NNS and CPS.

What would cause the fuel pump from engaging?

Re: 97 Cherokee will not turn on anything

Sounds like you need to look at the ignition switch located on the steering column. Check to make sure that it's plugged in and adjusted properly, if it is then check the fuel pump relay under the hood and underhood fuses as well to make sure they're not blown. You can also use a volt meter to check for voltage at the fuses and the relay. It's also possible but rare that something's wrong with the computer causing it too.

OK, I checked the CPS and between terminals 2/3 I show continuity.

When I attempted to go from the battey to the silinod it clicks then shuts down the complete electrical system, I had to reset it by removing the negitive battery cable.

I am now getting fuel pressure, I guess it had a stuck relay. I replaced it and now can hear the fuel pump working. Still not crank.

I guess I will go check the NSS

Re: 97 Cherokee will not turn on anything

I would just start by playing with the shifter, try to start it in neutral. I have had similar problems in the past with my nss in a 1994 jeep.

I played around with the shifter but still no luck.

I checked the NSS per the manual, I do not have continuity between the center pin and the transmission housing, therefore the switch must be bad.

I will see if I can fix this.

http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm

Check out that page it shows how to remove and rebuild the switch. Alot cheaper than having to replace it.
