intake reinstalled but wont start

this the problem, had an intake gasket leak. wife took the truck to the store, the truck died on her, i thought it may be cause of intake ( blown motor), got truck back home, change oil and tried to start, seemed like it jumped a tooth on timming chain but put new gaskets in anyway, went to start truck, wont start, but seems to wont, doing the same thing it was before gasket change. i sure distibutor is set right (number 1 but looks like it pointing at 6), how can i tell if chain has jumped.

Are you sure its not the fuel pump?

well, first off, if #1 is at TDC compression, and distributor is pointing to #6, then dist is 180deg off. to check if chain jumped, remove both valve covers, rotate engine to #1 TDC Compression, both valves should be closed on #1....and i think it's #4 that should be on overlap(both valves open at same time). you said you did gaskets anyway....intake? get distributor sorted first, and we can go from there. also, does the distributor cap have any corrosion in it?

Bring crank to TDC and install distributor per instructions. If it doesn't start, or backfires through the intake, pull the distributor and manually rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees and reinstall the distributor per the instructions. Two ways to tell if the chain jumped, one is the way 16th hippy described, the other is pull the timing cover and check cam and crank timing marks. Before checking either way, check timing chain slack...anything more than 12 degrees of crankshaft rotation slack, the chain can jump.
