Mean Sounding Truck
I am thinking of swapping my stock muffler for a Flowmaster Super 40, I have a 2006 Silverado with a K&N Intake kit # 77-3050KP. Will this setup sound good compared with just the intake alone. And will I notice any performance gains, mainly I want the truck to sound good.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
If you don't mind the resonance in the cab then it will sound good. You won't see much performance gain because the flowmaster is a fairly restrictive muffler. If you want performance then go with a straight through design such as a magnaflow, hooker, borla or corsa. I have always ran magnaflow but it seems too quiet for me so tomorrow i will be picking up a hooker aerochamber for the new 04 silverado.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
I have listened to some audio clips and the Super 40 seems to be the loudest, compared with some Gibsons and Magnaflows, I am only concerned with the sound, but don't want any drop in performance. Is this a good setup? And how does it compare with the stock muffler?

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
What size pipes is everybody running? We have a 6.0L in the shop that is mean w/2.5" but I have a 5.3L. Are dual 3" too big?

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
yes dual 3" is too big unless you have 500+ horsepower. You will lose alot of low end power with the loss of backpressure but you will gain a little in the top end. I just had a 3" SI/SO muffler welded onto my stock pipe which is 2.5" or 2.75" and a turndown on the end.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
has anyone ever put an X or H pipe on one of these trucks? now that would sound good with two flowmaster 40s. the factory y pipe kills alot of good sound.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
My stock muffler is 2.75" inlet/outlet and the Flowmaster Super 40's are only sold in 2.25", 2.50" and 3.00". Which one should i get and are there any reducers or conversions available.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
I just had a super 40 put on about 3 months ago,on a 99 Silverado. Had a muffler shop swap mufflers. Sounds Great (nice low rumble) and keeps factory look. Its a little noisy in the cab between 1500-3000rpm but not to bad. Gas milage went down about 1.5mpg, I noticed slightly better throttle response and feel, and maybe a tiny bit more hp (probably just me). I cant complain about it bought muffler used for 15 bucs, and installed for 25.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
Do you think that buying a new one would perform much differently than one that you buy for $15. What condition did you buy the muffler? And would there be any difference in performance between the 2.50" and the 3.00", my stock muffler is 2.75" and is quite large. Is the flow of the aftermarket muffler going to make up in performance what it lacks in size?

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
The super 40(s) I bought were actually about 2 months old and were only used for about a month by a police officer who took them off because they made his impala SS too loud. I actually bought 2 but didn't want to spend the $200+ for duals. Im not sure what size pipe it is. All i can tell you is that its the same size IN/OUT as the factory exhaust. An exhaust extension was added due to the smaller size of the muffler to make it fit the factory position. Like most people will say on here is that your gains in hp are not going to be totally amazing even with duals. Unless you go with full headers and entirely new exhaust and maybe an X pipe the performance gains are going to be rather minimal. The more money you spend the more performance gains you might see. Even with a single in dual out muffler you may wake up the neighbors with good sound but your going to be lucky to see even a 5hp increase. Yes the super 40 is a small muffler and as far as flow goes couldn't tell ya. Anything has to be better than the factory muffler as far as flow goes. If its just sound your going for I would say go for the Super 40. It has a nice mellow rumble to it (rather quiet) at idle, but as soon as you give it a little gas it really shows off the 5.3L.

Re: Mean Sounding Truck
So from what I have read flowmasters restrict flow and magna flows seem too quiet. Somebody should make a poll so we can find out what the best is.
