1999 grand cherokee larado i might buy and have questions

Well, I just looked at a '99 Cherokee that seems like a decent deal. It has about 135k miles on it. What are the problem areas that I should look into on this before I commit. I'm in need of a decent ride to rack miles up on. thx

Re: 1999 grand cherokee larado i might buy and have questions

1. Transmission:
Can be a trouble spot, especially if it has a 4.0 liter motor. Slipping, delayed or rough shifts warrant a closer look. Check the fluid level, color, smell, and appearance.

2. Front brakes:
Some are prone to rotor warping.

3. Transfer case:
Take a slow, full steering wheel lock tight turn. If there is shuddering or something that doesn't feel right the transfer case could have a problem. It shouldn't be noisy either.

4. Front and rear differentials:
A little noise is normal, but beware of howling noises that sound like they are coming from the front or rear end.
Sometimes it only shows up at highway speeds - 50 mph up.

5. Cooling system:
This is often a neglected area; check the coolant, it should be clean looking with no contaminants. 135k mi is not bad, but at that mileage it's probably due for a radiator and thermostat, unless it was already done.

Both motors are pretty solid given proper maintenance. Check the plugs and do a compression test if you can.
If it was a JGC Limited I would also say Blend Doors, but Laredos do not come equipped with AZC controls so you can cross that off, but keep in mind if you look at a Limited.

Re: 1999 grand cherokee larado i might buy and have questions

Hey thanks. I think for the money I'm going to go ahead with the truck. The only issue I have is with the 4wd lever. The truck sat for a few weeks in 4wd and when I went to drive it was hard to shift it back into 2wd then it seemed for a few miles it was still in 4wd while it was suppose to be in 2wd. Some one told me it was probably something simple like either to lube the cable or even replace it.

No cable to lube for the 4wd lever.
Leaving it parked for 2 weeks with 4wd engaged should not cause it to not disengage the 4wd.
If the lever moves, it could be improperly wearing tires (front end parts worn?)
I'd suggest you take the jeep to mechanic for a inspection. 4wd issues aren't cheap.
