98 1.8 warm start problem

I have a 98 Passat with a 1.8 engine. The car has 105,000 miles on it. I use full synthetic 5w30 oil and an all synthetic oil filter. The air filter is clean and there is no check engine light on. The car starts fine when the engine is cold, 35-90 degrees outside air temp. After running the car for 5 minutes or longer, it does not want to restart after sitting for 15 minutes to 2 hours. However this is intermittent. Sometimes the car will start right away, sometimes I have to crank the engine for 15 seconds wait 1 minute crank again for 15 seconds, wait a minute then crank it again for 15- 30 seconds with the gas pedal pushed to the floor and then it will start. I can always smell fuel from the exhaust when this happens, on the second and third attempt to start the car.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Got check engine light for coolant temp sending unit. Changed it. Problem solved.
