Problem with horn and steering wheel. Need help urgent!

I have 94 LeSabre Custom.

My horn started coming on by itself and staying on until I either hit or move the center of steering wheel where the air bag is. It looks like something inside the casing is broken because sometimes pressing the area will turn it off, but also if I grab that part by the top and bottom and squeeze it, it will also come off.

So far I have disconnected the battery, the SIR system and took out the whole part, that is, the center of the steering wheel that houses the air bag and the horn buttons or whatever they are. Problem is, I can't go any further than that, no more than removing a metal plate with four black screws, but the rest of the part seems to be mounted by pressure and it doesn't have any screws or anything that I can pry out. Is there any way to open it up to see what's broken and replace it, or do I have to buy the whole thing? And if I do, what's the exact name of the part? I searched Delco and oehq.com and I found steering accesories and parts, but not this specific part.

Also, can anybody tell me if there's a fuse that can disable the horn without disabling the automatic door locks? For some reason the two are in the same fuse (under the hood fuse block) and it's really annoying to be without the automatic door lock.

I'm really pressed for time here because since it's winter if I don't fix this today then I won't be able to work on it until next weekend (because it gets darker very soon when I come back from work).

Thanks,

Re: Problem with horn and sterring wheel. Need help urgent!

This is just another GM design flaw...switches located in a place where they can't be accessed or replaced without replacing the complete air bag module. Most people just put a cheap push button switch in series with the horn switch and mount the push button on top of the air bag housing. You might try a local JY for a replacement air bag module. Finding the right color will be the trick! BTW, you can disconnect the wire terminals at the horn until you find a fix!

Thanks for the reply. Actually I put it back connecting both terminals, and now it seems fine. It's extremely sensitive to the touch, if I move my hand over the area barely touching it the horn comes on right away, but if I don't touch it at all it stays off, at least so far. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I've seen this in cold temperatures on some wheel covers with shrunken vinyl. A little warm air on the sounder pad will relax the vinyl and open the horn contacts. I'm not sure if this is true on SIR modules as well, and I wouldn't advocate applying any heat to the SIR in any case.

It would be better to start a new thread with your question. In addition, be sure to list the year of your car; this makes a big difference!
