'07 rear brake squeal

My '07 has about 39K miles on it. I do a lot of highway driving. Anyway at about 26k the rear brakes started intermittently making a squeaking noise that reminded me of wet brakes or a stuck parking brake. It's not the chirp you hear when pads are worn out but a steady squeal.

Took it to a local Ford dealer and they said it is a known problem with the drum shoes and it would cost me Boo-Coo bucks to have repaired, since it was just out of warranty. Well, since I do most of my own mech work, I've let them ride. Now, the squeak is happening more often. It's almost like they are glazed.

Has anybody else run across this or heard of the defect?

Thanks
Bill

Re: '07 rear brake squeal

I've never gotten out of the dealer for less than $200 for anything. I've heard it's the shop that carrys the dealership. Not the car sales. Before doing anything mechanical try a few very hard stops from about 60 mph. You may be able to break the glaze off the shoes. If not, put new shoes on with new brake hardware. No more miles than you have it's a shame because rear brakes normally last at least 100,000 miles. But, for $25 you can get 2 pairs of brake shoes at any major outlet. It wouldn't hurt to have the drums turned at this time, also.

Re: '07 rear brake squeal

Thanks for the info. I've tried stomping them a few times, but with the anti-lock system it's tough to get them to bite real hard.

The dealer service mgr did tell me there is a TSB out about the problem that says to change the shoes. So, Ford knows about it but won't make good on it.

It did it a few times today, so it's still intermittent. And FWIW, it's not so much a high pitched squeal as a low pitch.
