Cleaning up a car body.
Hey peoples
Can a body be cleaned up or refinished? I screwed up my first time body so i took to the sink with my sand paper and removed as much as i could and reprimed and painted, however it still does not look right! Can a car body be cleaned and restarted? or can you order just car bodys from someplace? |

Re: Cleaning up a car body.
I use SuperClean. It's a very strong degreaser that will get under the paint, strip chrome, but won't harm plastic. I buy it at the local WalMart, in the automotive section.
Find a plastic container and fill it until the body can be completely submerged. Check on it after a day or so and you'll see the paint comming off. Try not to get it on your hands as it will dry them out quickly. There are other systems for removing paint and I'm sure you'll get excellent advice on those, too. |

Re: Cleaning up a car body.
I assume this is the Skyline you started, and that you painted it with Tamiya primer and paint?
Yes, the paint and primer can most definitely be stripped off for repainting. The best thing to use for stripping Tamiya lacquers is 99% or 91% isopropyl alcohol. Place the body in a coverable container, fill it with the alcohol, cover and let soak. The alcohol will soften and eventually dissolve the paint. Once the paint is softened, you can scrub the softened paint off with an old toothbrush (wear goggles!). This way you can safely, easily and completely clean the body back to bare plastic.

Re: Cleaning up a car body.
Check out the Car Modeling FAQ, there's a section on stripping paint.
Second to what's contained there, you can use 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to remove the paint, just soak the body in it for a day and scrub with a toothbrush, repeat as necessary.
