Smile Programming Keyless Entry Fob

I have a 95 XLT. The batteries in my keyless entry fob died. I did not replace them right away. When I replaced the batteries the remote did not work. I do not want to pay the dealer an arm and a leg for 1 minute of work. Can anyone help me re-program my my fob? Thnx.

Make sure that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered
Turn the ignition key from OFF to RUN five times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN.
If the RAP system has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and then unlock all doors.

Press any button on a transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each transmitter has been programmed. If the vehicle has memory seats, look on the back of the transmitters and make sure that transmitter No. 1 is programed first, and that transmitter No. 2 is programmed second.
If the door locks do not respond for any transmitter, wait a few seconds and press the button again. If the door locks still fail to respond, go to Pinpoint Test A .

Turn ignition OFF (or wait up to five minutes after Step 2) to exit program mode. If a new set of transmitters have been programmed (or reprogrammed), the remote control alarm and door lock system will lock and unlock all doors one last time to confirm.

Problem with my 2002 Explorer

fordman123 or someone else . . .

Can you help me program two remotes on my 2002 Explorer?

I followed the reprogramming instructions, turning the ignition between lock and on eight times in 10 seconds. The doors locked and unlocked as they were suppose to. The first of two remotes locked the doors, but the second one did not.

But neither remote worked when I finished.

Now when I try to reprogram again, I get the lock/unlock confirm OK, but absolutely nothing happens when I press either remote. I checked the batteries in both and they test OK.

What did I do wrong?

Appreciate any help.

Re: Programming Keyless Entry Fob

are you sure the remotes are for a 2002 explorer? there are several different models of the remote and they only work with specific autos. does it look like the original?

Not at all sure that they are for a 2002. Is there any way to tell by looking inside or outside?

TennTom:

Try this link www.remotesunlimited.com for method to identify your remotes. I assume that the remotes you have in your hands came with the car and you were using it before and for some reason need to have them reprogram? Or are they remotes you got and you want to use them also? FYI, you can only have four remotes. If you have the first two and you want to add 2 more, all four must be done at the same time for them to work. The FCC ID on the back of the remotes must all be the same, do not go with the looks only.

Thanks for the link. Will give it a look.

No, my remotes aren't original equipment.

Re: Programming Keyless Entry Fob

my remote is 1.4 x 1.7 inches , says 2L2T-15K601-BA on the back. top two ROUND buttons are pictures of alock, and un lock. bottom SQUARE pictures are a red horn and blue hatch back. my 98 mustang is 1.4 x 2 inches, four buttons have names, not drawings of the above, "lock, unlock, panic, trunk".

I did exactly the same as you did and I have the same problem. If you find out how to solve it, please let me know, if I find it out first I'll let you know.

Re: Programming Keyless Entry Fob

Do you have an owner's manual for your Explorer? If so, the procedure for your specific vehicle should be listed in the owner's manual.

What year is your Explorer? Do you know if the remotes you have ever worked?

Since this thread is almost 4 years old now, I wouldn't count on someone responding to a post of theirs from that long ago.

Re: Programming Keyless Entry Fob

One of them is the one I've been using since I bought my Explorer. My problem started when I got the second one.

I followed the reprogramming instructions, turning the ignition between lock and on eight times in 10 seconds. The doors locked and unlocked as they were suppose to. The first of two remotes locked the doors, but the second one did not.

Exactly the same that happened to "Tenn Tom"

Re: Programming Keyless Entry Fob

Page 121 of the owner's manual explains the process. Sounds like you are doing all the correct steps and getting the correct indications....

Does the FCC ID of the second remote match that of the original remote? Although if not, I'm not sure why the original remote wouldn't work, unless playing with the programming coincidently caused the remote battery to go dead.

From the owner's manual:
To program the transmitters yourself:
  • Insert a key in the ignition and turn from 1 (LOCK) to 3 (ON) and cycle between 1 (LOCK) and 3 (ON) eight times in rapid succession (within 10 seconds) with the eighth turn ending in the 3 (ON) position. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that programming mode has been entered.
  • Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been programmed. (If more than 20 seconds pass before pressing a remote transmitter button, the programming mode will exit and the procedure will have to be repeated.)
  • Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has been programmed.
  • When you have completed programming the remote transmitters, turn the ignition to 1 (LOCK) or wait 20 seconds. Again the doors will lock/unlock to confirm programming has been completed.
