new gaskets

my 92 caprice runs like its new and looks new except under the hood, little bit dirty and grimey.
recently i noticed some coolent leaking through the intake gasket and the thermostat gasket. anything leaking drives me nuts, so i want to clean it all up and replace all the gaskets.
what brand of gaskets and silicon do i need to use?
aside from a gasket scrapper what else do i need?

Re: new gaskets

Flepro gaskets are considered the best for production engines. We prefer Permatex "Aviation" sealer in most places for water. Silicone is for the corners ONLY. That is, where parts come together, like the intake/heads/block. The more silicone (we call it "bubba-cone") you use, the better the chances it will leak. So use it SPARINGLY!

Get a service manual so you don't do a bunch of extra work, and so you don't break anything you may need later...

Re: new gaskets

For the Good factory service manuals the dealer or sometimes E bay.
Parts places only have Chilton or Haynes general repair manuals.
NOT MUCH HELP ON THE REAL GOOD HIGH TECH STUFF.

Re: new gaskets

They Haynes manuals are terrible. I bought one for my Caprice and some of the sections are very much outdated and are for other models and years! You can always go to your local library to use theirs, found in the reference section. The bad part is that you have to photocopy the pages you want, they don't lend them out.

Re: new gaskets - & shop manuals.

Sometimes the original manuals are still available from the publisher for GM: www.helminc.com/. The service manual for a 91 Caprice is listed at $105. I imagine it would pay for itself fairly quick.
And after they are sold out of hard copy manuals, they often will sell CDs of the manual instead.
