key fob unlocks, but does not lock?

Hi all, just thought I would run this by the experts before I start digging into this, but as stated when I press the unlock button on my key fob the locks go up but when I press the lock button nothing happens unless I press button twice and the the horn beeps but locks do not go down. I have not changed battery in key fob but it seems like if it operates the trunk and unlock that it would be fine and it seems unlikely there would be a different fuse for locks up or locks down. Any ideas?

No expertise here, but some lines of logic. You could have a worn or dirty contact in your fob or you do have a weak battery that happens to have a harder time getting current through that one switch contact that could be just a wee bit dirty. See if it still works as far from your car as it used to or what the manual says its range should be. I'm not sure if it can be opened enough to clean it, an electronic cleaner is best. Brake cleaner will probably work with a q tip or pencil eraser, but then needs to be rinsed. Spraying inside it without opening it to the contacts is worth a try. I don't think the batteries are too expensive, so it would be easy to rule out the batteries. Let us know what was wrong.

Re: key fob unlocks, but does not lock?

I'd say that the power locks are all right if they will all lock from the switch inside the car. If they will change the batteries in the hand held unit. Check the 10 amp room fuse and the 30 amp door lock fuse. To reprogram your hand held unit turn the ignition switch from off to on 5 times within 10 seconds ending in on. If the RAP enters the program mode successfully it will lock then unlock all doors automatically.

Re: key fob unlocks, but does not lock?

Well this is a 1997 sedan and it came with the driver door actuator only and I wired it and installed actuator in passenger door and it has worked flawlessly for about 2 and a half years. I really think the actuators and key fob are alright but think there must be a relay that controls this function but I have no idea where this relay is. I do not have my Haynes manual here with me right now, but I think I will have a look at the wiring schematic and see if I can make sense out of it.

Re: key fob unlocks, but does not lock?

Okay, I found that there is a door lock relay behind the kick panel on passengers side. When I put my hand on it and and push the unlock button I can feel it click inside, but when I push the lock button nothing happens. Would that be the fault of the relay or a bad connection with the wiring?

Re: key fob unlocks, but does not lock?

The Door Lock/Unlock relay has 3 relays in it. One for the Lock function and another for the Unlock function and another for the RAP module. If you can feel the unlock function click, but can't feel the Lock function click it most likely a fault of the relay. A problem with the wiring could exist, but it is doubtful if you haven't been working on it etc. I'd rule out a switch problem if neither side won't operate the lock function. Replace the relay if you want, but it still doesn't rule out a wiring problem.
